Driving Lessons

I teach a syllabus that is broadly in line with the one set by the Driving Standards Agency. This covers all the topics you will need in order to pass your test and drive safely afterwards.

I include hazard perception training with the driving lessons as well as question and answer sessions on driving theory which will help with preparing you for the theory and hazard perception test.

Only one pupil is ever in the car during a lesson; therefore you receive a full session of one to one tuition.

How long will it take to learn to drive?

Obviously it will vary from person to person, depending on ability and motivation. The DSA say the “average” number of lessons is 45 hours of professional training. After around 20 hours of training you may be ready to gain extra experience with a family member. This sort of practice can be very helpful.

As well as practical lessons it is important to read the Highway Code and to study Driving - the essential skills. Both of these publications will help you understand what you are doing.

Practical test

Why do candidates fail the practical test?. The most common cause is lack of preparation; this leads to poor decision making and ultimately failure.

Some of the most common causes of failure. In no particular order.

  1. Poor observation at junctions
  2. Too slow, lack of progress
  3. Poor observation and/or incorrect position on the reverse park manoeuvre
  4. Road position
  5. Speed on approach to hazards

In my experience most people are nervous before the test, this is normal, however if the candidate is well prepared any nerves can be overcome early on in the test, and the examiner will do their best to put the candidate at ease. If the candidates so wishes, I will sit in on the test; some candidates find this reassuring.
